It was much less gritty and realistic that I thought it would be, opting more for musical montage and subtle voice-over that makes it much more at home on IFC than HBO. I was reminded of The Thin Red Line but not as sprawling or message-y and in black & white to try to match with the archival stuff, which was pretty visceral. It's a good way to save on your effects budget and the added realism throws a few gut-punches in there when you see the bombs explode or charred bodies and whatnot. Overall it was well worth watching. |
