12.20.11 | Netflix | Oops. Forgot to write notes about this. Finally getting around to this series after reading the books but before seeing Fincher's take. This was a pretty weird book structure-wise and I think the movie struggles trying to make it work. The end in particular seems really hurried and forced. Do the people who didn't read the book understand why Lisbeth was a blonde at the end? probably not, but on the other hand maybe not knowing every excrutiating step to her financial heist isn't a bad thing. Also the weird complexity of Blomqvist running a magazine but publishing a book is completely side-stepped, probably for the better. All in all it's a pretty bland movie I thought. Sure, Noomi Rapace was great and the male lead as well, but it's just kind of all hurried and bland and not that interesting when i see it on the screen. Bleeding into the second movie a bit because I watched it on Christmas and kept my tradition of no notes on that day, the blonde giant and zalachenko REALLY fall flat on screen. In the book we're inside every character so we really feel them breathe and think but seeing them flash by on the screen is a bit disappointing. Also, without Lisbeth falling in love with Blomqvist, it really takes a whole arc out of the trilogy. Big news right? the books were better. |
