07.19.14 | Netflix | Penn & Teller's friend invents/discovers a technique using lenses and mirrors to replicate Vermeer's photo-realistic painting style. In large part, the fun of this movie is seeing a very intelligent and rich guy follow his hobby. Wouldn't it be awesome to have the capability to follow this curiosity to the point of international travel, learning a new language, learning the technique to: fabricate custom furniture, grind optical lenses, make paint from pigment, and construct an entire replica room then spend 200 days making one painting just to satisfy that curiosity? But along the way we get an insight into Vermeer and a lot of those other Golden Age realistic painters' process might have been, and the dedication and attention that makes their art stand out, and question a greater concept of how technogoly compromises or enhances art. All this and it's not so long that it wears out its welcome. Good movie. |
