07.28.05 | Netflix | Even though I no longer actively rent and watch Brian De Palma movies, i am still dense enough to add one to my queue if I hear enough about it to make me feel like i should see it. Every time I feel the same: he has shimmers of quality but takes too much from Hitchcock. In the supplements on the DVD he even complains about being called a Hitchcock rip-off, saying that Hitch has done all of the ideas in the thriller genre so if you want to make a good trhiller you have to take from the master. BS. This movie is like De Palma saw Psycho and said "i want to make my own version." At least Van Sant was crazy enough to make a shot-for-shot remake instead of some psuedo-realized flipside of the Psycho coin. All the Psycho turns are in this movie, it's just told differently (not as well, and with more split-screen). Bah. |
