I recently watched Sports Night due to constant mention on the West Wing Weekly podcast and I was kind of surprised how much of Sorkin's style was present right there in the beginning. A lot of what I thought was fresh and new in The West Wing was actually directly copied from a previous episode of Sports Night. So i feel acutely aware of Sorkin's tricks of the trade or tools in the chest or whatever you want to call it, and this movie has like 1000% Sorkin all over it. There is so much voice over in this movie... It's all interesting and well-written but it's just so SO much. It gives the movie a density that keeps it engaging but also sometimes gets in the way of any real emotion. Everything is just TOO much. I still liked it though. Also, who knew Tobey Maquire was such an ass! |
