08.10.25 | Internet | A little glimpse into what my weekend nights have been like lately: Molly goes to sleep around midnight, I play Cyberpunk, then somewhere around 2AM I start to think about maybe watching a movie to end the night. My ideal bedtime is 4. So I start thinking about quitting the game after I wrap this quest up, or just one more exploration bit, then I actually quit around 2:30, 3AM. Now comes the part where I browse the half-dozen streaming services that I pay for looking for a movie I want to see, which is incredibly difficult because all of them want to serve TV shows to me and seem like they only offer 5 movies, 3 of which are Final Destination films. So now it's 3:30 and my options are limited since 5AM is my absolute limit. I hate going to bed when it's getting light out, I hate being awake when others might be waking up. I don't want to wake anyone up by coming to bed, just hate it. So now I need a 90-minute movie, and holy shit I've actually stumbled upon a movie I want to see, but it's 2 hours 17 minutes. Now it's close enough to 4 that I just go to bed without watching anything. Well, last night I found Barbarian just under the wire and today I started this fucker at 8 to make sure I could watch it. Of course there were interruptions right at the climax of the film, but I guess that's the price of adulthood and cohabitating with a partner and a pet. I don't know when watching movies have become such a tricky thing for me but goddamn it's like a whole thing every time. Or at least it feels that way sometimes. Anyway, this movie. It was decent. Certainly well-made and all that, and Bong Joon Ho's sensibilities come through with a little humor and a little commentary. I have yet to see Okja but it seems like he loves his little weird-looking monsters. Mark Ruffalo's performance is just a tad too close to Trump but I guess that's the point (well, Trump meets L Ron Hubbard). I think after playing so much Cyberpunk and being in 2025 I'm gonna take a break from the dystopian stuff for a while. It's hitting too close to home. I think if we're talking clone movies set in space I still prefer Moon? but as long as it's not a competition this is pretty good as well. |
