10.05.25 | Internet | I wasn't planning on watching this but I'm writing this due to a very dumb and regrettably common occurrence. It's Saturday night, everyone else is asleep, I've played a few hours of video games, listened to a podcast or two, and feel like I could watch a movie before bed. I have about two hours but ideally 90 minutes before I'd like to be in bed. I look around for something to watch. What about this? 2 hours, 30 minutes. OK, what about this? 2 hours 15 minutes. Fuck me, what about this? 1 hour 49 minutes, but on second thought I don't really want to watch that tonight. Now it's 30 minutes later. Do I watch an episode of TV instead? It's basically all I can fit in now. Fuck it, I'll watch half a movie, but I don't want to split my top pick in half. So what's a movie I won't mind turning off halfway through so I don't go to bed after the sun's up? Superman? Eh, whatever. I'll watch half of Superman. So here we are. This wasn't bad, and I guess for DC being OKAY means being good. I did like the different tone... no retread of the origin story, plenty of heroes and villains already in the world, people lackadaisically watching giant buildings get toppled because they're desensitized to the constant life-threatening danger. It also makes me realize what an awful take Zack Snyder had on this world. He tried to make everyone a Batman but really Batman is the only DC hero who's not goofy as fuck, and even then I'm only talking about a couple shades of Batman. I'm not DC expert but Gunn's take on the world feels much more comic-accurate. Adam West would fit in nicely here. But the movie should've been called Krypto and Friends and because he's the star of the movie. Superman's big problem is he has to be a nice guy so all the cool stuff goes to the dog. I don't want to spoil anything because it's not worth it but Krypto's involved in all the critical beats of the story. I guess it's one way to go. I don't have built-in love for Superman to begin with, or most any other DC character so I'm not super invested, but to me this movie holds together based on everyone who is not Superman. I think the story tried to be that in lieu of kryptonite, Superman's weak spot is his kindness which gets assaulted by trolls and assholes that are very similar to real politicians and billionaires that we see on the news, but brilliant mind Lex Luthor still monologues like The Incredibles doesn't exist because his plan is so stupid. So, whatever. It was okay. I wasn't bored, I didn't groan too much, it didn't feel interminably long. I don't feel a new cut would do it justice, or watching in black and white would help. I wish James Gunn's world the best but mostly I wish I stopped playing my game an hour earlier so I could've watched something else. |
