| 12.05.25 | Internet | When I think about why it's taken so long to make a John Candy documentary, I have to wonder whether there's just no story there (not likely) or if there's some personal demons or dark secret or something no one wants to talk about. That was the major worry in watching this because I don't want there to be personal demons in John Candy's life story. I just want him to be like he was on screen: warm, personable, sweet, charming, and most of all funny. Well that's what I got. 2 hours of people gushing about the man and damn if it isn't the most tear-inducing doc I've seen in a long time. I defy anyone to watch this without shedding a tear. No one on screen could! How can anyone that watches it!? John Candy was such a lovable guy and it's so sad that he's not around. I know when he was alive, his last run of movies were not exactly gold, but imagine more of a dramatic turn like JFK or a renaissance period like Bill Murray found with Wes Anderson. Imagine seeing him pop up on tv shows like 30 Rock or Arrested Development. Imagine him in Only Murders in the Building. God. So, this doc is about what you'd want. Colin Hanks gets about everyone you'd want to hear from (with the notable exception of Rick Moranis. I thought he was looking to get back into acting? It would've been amazing to see him here talking about SCTV and Spaceballs and Little Shop of Horrors and telling the Internet story about how Candy turned down roles in Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids because he thought Moranis was better suited for them. The rest of the SCTV crew is here though, along with Ackroyd and Chris Columbus and archival interviews from John Hughes and Belushi. It's very well put together and complete. My only gripe is sometimes the music is overbearing, like it's sad enough listening to eulogy speeches watching footage of the funeral service. I don't need the soundtrack poking needles in my eyes chanting "Cry! Cry! Cry!" Aside from that, great doc. Makes me want to watch Splash and Summer Rental and Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains and Home Alone and Vacation and everything else all over again. |
