| 12.07.25 | Internet | I tried to watch this about five years ago but I was tired and quickly fell asleep and never came back because my lasting memory was just a bunch of talking. I'm glad I gave it another shot but it mostly is just a bunch of talking. I think the most impressive aspect to this movie are the frequent mid- to long shot tableaus of like a dozen recognizable actors in period costume. Many actors don't get but a single scene or a single moment to shine but practically ever speaking role is taken by someone really good. I also came to like the talking. It strongly reminded me of the continental congress portions of 1776, which I saw in 10th grade social studies class and has stuck with me ever since, where a bunch of good actors are shouting smartly-written stuff at each other. I also liked how the movie wasn't a biopic but rather a short slice of time in Lincoln's life. I didn't love the ending though. They had an absolutely perfect ending with Lincoln being late for the theater and saying "I suppose it's time to go. Though I would rather stay" and the guy who played Thufir in Dune watches him walk down the hallway. Spielberg being Spielberg, he could've dissolved from that shot and still had his inauguration speech no problem without the theater scene and seeing him on his death bed. That scene's for the biopic version of the movie, not the 13th amendment version of the movie. Relatively minor though considering it's 2.5 hours of talking and that's my only complaint. |
