I think it mentions that they're in Idaho but parts look awfully PNW to me. I think it's just me but the period setting and third-person narration from Will Patton gave me a sense of constant impending calamity while watching this. I put it on thinking it would be a cozy thing for me to fall asleep to and finish tomorrow but I stayed awake through the whole thing wondering what next tragedy will befall Edgerton. I was reminded of movies like The Devil All The Time (is that what it was called?) and Wisconsin Death Trip and Mandy in a weird way. Like, as soon as a dog appeared on screen I was like "ok when's this dog dying and how brutal are they going to make it?" Every new character that we see I thought "is he a bad guy or a good guy that's gonna die?" I guess I've seen too many of those kinds of movies. I should watch more Bridges of Madison County or Horse Whisperer or something. This movie wound up having a little bit of that - it is a drama after all - but mostly it was just a quiet peaceful visually pleasing meditation on this guy's life. I suppose it's closest to Into the Wild for me but without the bummer ending. Very pleasant film if you're in the mood for it. |
