| 12.21.25 | Internet | Clint Eastwood is a fighter pilot with PTSD who's recruited to go behind the iron curtain and steal a top-secret Russian prototype jet and fly it to safety where the eggheads can discern its secrets. I watched this on someone's twitch stream so there were frequent pauses for commentary but I saw the beginning, middle, and end so I'm counting it. Especially since I didn't think much of it. There's a certain charm here which I liked but I think at this point it's mostly nostalgia for how movies looked and were in the early 80s. A movie like this was made from a book. Several years before Top Gun, several years before Hunt for Red October. Clint just read a book and was like "fighter jets are cool, let's do it." Also the first half, two thirds of the movie is basically a cold war spy movie to infiltrate him which makes the third act once he gets in the jet that much weaker. I think at the time he was going for spectacle since I don't think people had seen much of that kind of high-speed dogfighting, but now we've seen a lot of it so instead of awe I was studying the special effect technique and how well it's pulled off or how dated it looks. Overall, I'm not as big of a fan of 80s Clint Eastwood as I am of 70s Clint or 90s Clint. To me this one falls pretty mid. I think I will offer it some credit for either starting or helping to start the 80s trend of high-tech vehicle action like Blue Thunder, Night Rider, and Airwolf. This jet couldn't talk but I think I heard it was receptive to brainwaves(?) so it counts. |
