12.23.25Internet The latest Predator movie and one step closer to a good Predator vs. Alien movie that every nerd has been waiting for despite the previous garbage fire attempts. I feel like there was an AvP comic in the early 2000s that had a Predator as a protagonist on an alien world that was seeded with xenomorphs just for hunting which is such a badass idea. Whoever put that xenomorph skull on the ship at the end of Predator 2 (a movie I'm unironically a fan of by the way) was a genius. And yet it's been like 35 years and we haven't seen it.

Anyway, this is a movie where a young predator goes on his first hunt to prove himself in the brutal chaotic culture of the Predators (now known as the Yautchi? Yautja?). He goes to an extra brutal death planet where everything's trying to kill you to hunt this mythic beast and finds Elle Fanning as a Weyland Yutani synth that's gotten her legs ripped off. So then it's kind of a buddy deal where the predator learns the power of friendship.

I liked this. I like Prey too so Dan Trachtenberg is now like the Predator savior because he's not a room full of fucking idiots and he actually likes the brand. It took a while to get comfortable with the language actually making sense and seeing what was a crazy fucking alien badass 40s years ago now shouldering clunky exposition scenes while sparring with his older brother, but the world is sufficiently alien and cool and there are nice nods to the first like how in lieu of his own weapons the predator needs to use what he's learned of the planet to help him fight the bad guys (in this case a cadre of guilt-free synths with white blood so it's ok to completely dismember them). The end fight is a clear nod to another franchise but still kinda cool and not boring. The predator has a character arc, it's still a movie, but it ends well enough on a button promising more but not so much that it forgot to wrap up this story.

pretty good!
